It's a new week and for the start of it, we're going to be looking at the new Sailor Moon "Charm" Necklace by GE, released in late 2011/early 2012.

Quality - I'm just going to say it outright, that I'm being generous with most of this. The quality of this necklace is less than par. The materials used in making this chain necklace can only be described as either steel or pewter. No matter how you wear it, be prepared to have some sort of black or even green marking on your neck. The tiny charms are no better, being of flimsy metal and brushed with an acrylic to make them appear "shiny".

Appearance - How can I describe this nicely? Well, it's Sailor Moon! .. Unfortunately, being Sailor Moon isn't enough. The charms are FAR too tiny for anyone to really see.. the chain looks like something out of a hardware store and even the logo on it, you need a magnifying glass to see!! With everything being centered, it also make this "charm" necklace far less charming than it appears.

Packaging - At least GE did something right, wrapping this piece into plastic. Although the way the necklace is stuffed into the cardboard piece, it really is deceiving.

Art - The artwork is the same as in previous items. With Sailor Moon and Luna on the front with the newer Sailor Moon logo above set atop that pink, symbol and starry backdrop. Honestly, I wish they would expand their artistic horizons a bit more.

Functionality - Okay, functionally speaking, it's a necklace. It's meant to wear around your neck and look nice. . . Well, it does half of that then. It goes around the neck as it's meant to. So you really can't complain about it not being what it's set out to be.

Fun - This necklace is no where near "fun". But, if you're looking for something to wear under your blouse, to secretly wear your Moonie pride without anyone being the wiser, this is the necklace for you. The charms are far too small to really be both recognizable and noticeable, which makes it perfect if you're looking to hide this piece while wearing.

Cost - I've seen this piece run from about $8.00 to $15.00, depending on where you go.

Availability - If you're lucky enough to be near an FYE store, you might be able to find it there. Otherwise, you can find it both on eBay and Amazon as well for a decent price.

Overall this piece seems to be a wash. I understand what they were trying to do, but this would be better suited to a bracelet (which already has been released). I believe if they really wanted this to go over well, they should have extended the charms at least 2/3 of the way through. Instead this necklace just comes off as poor design and an excuse to get people to buy both the necklace and bracelet as a set.
If you're looking for something that's going to call out to your inner Moonie, look this one over. There are plenty more out there (that I'll review another time) that are better suited to that. If you're looking for subtle and simple, this is the right necklace for you. Just please remember that this piece is likely to give off some staining, so take caution while wearing with nicer clothing.

  1. I have this too. I wore it once, will never wear again. It was awful!

The chain I felt was so ugly and it sat awkwardly on my chest, the chain was in a slanted position. If you try and move it back to the correct postion, it moves back to the incorrect position. Also, the charms tend to 'flip' a lot, which really bugged me.

When I first received the necklace I was sad because the pic of it on the net made it appear the charms were bigger (at least twice the size) plus Mars' charm is a orangey colour :/

Surely they could've made a better chain?

    1. They honestly could have, but I'm beginning to think that maybe they just were trying to pump as much Sailor Moon as they could out there in a limited time. I can only hope that this won't become a pattern with GE and that things can only get better.

  2. Totally agree with you. Saw the necklace on Amazon, and it's very cheap looking and non-discript. It reminds me of the "kiddie jewlery" sold at Justice tween fashion stores.

If you want to show true Moonie pride, get the large Sailor Moon logo necklace. It will go great with the SM cosplay t-shirt.

    1. Absolutely! Or even the bow necklace is a step up from this "piece of work". It just screams "gumball machine prize" to me. :/
