It's another Flash Back Friday and this Friday we're going to take a look at the Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon Teletia S phone. This item was made by Bandai Japan in 2003 for the ever popular TV show "Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon".
Quality - The quality of this phone is amazing. While it looks like it might be a cheap phone like most kids get now-a-days in their local toy store, this phone is much better built than that. It's made of a harder thicker plastic, with nice soft buttons to press. This phone also has a fantastic range of phrases and music when entering in the many different numbers! The sound quality is very well done, with no muffling or crackling what so ever. Needless to say, this phone is built to LAST.
Appearance - This phone has the same appearance as the one used in the TV show. Bandai really tried to outdo themselves when they made this phone, as it's almost spot on with the one's used! It has a nice little off and on button, chiming when it turns on, much like all the other PGSM toys. Leaving it closed, it will randomly ring and thus light up just above that crystal heart. The top 3 buttons are made of a harder plastic, while the others are the more familiar soft one's. The cards slide right in and if you'll notice, all of the cards have this nice red heart. When placed in the phone, it will appear as a number you can dial to either transform or talk to your favorite senshi! Cooler still, is if you put in a different card, you can see the back of the card in the little heart window, taking your phone from Sailor Moon to Sailor Mercury, for example. And let's not forget the star speaker backing on the phone, a nice elegant approach if I do say so myself.
Packaging - The packaging on this particular piece is very nicely done. It's very well secured in the box with a plastic piece that is almost molded to the phone itself. Behind it, you'll find a bunch of cards for you to play with the phone with. The actual box itself seems very sturdy and without having anything frustrating to hold the phone in, it makes it incredibly easy for kids to get it open and play.
Art - There really isn't much "art" on the box per se. Instead we have the ever so happy Sailor Moon posing around the box, with the phone and making her signature pose on the sides. We also have the familiar background with the jewels around the box on a blue backing. Finally on the back, we have a picture of everything that comes with your new purchase of the Teletia S. The "artwork" on the cards is very nicely done. With the symbols on the back being done very elegantly. On the front of every card is a very nice picture of each of the senshi or of Usagi in her disguises.
Functionality - This is where this gets a lot of fun. Functionally speaking, this toy phone is absolutely amazing! With so many phrases and ways to play with this phone, the possibilities are almost endless! Not to mention, they did have Teletia S cards as well that you could collect to have her change into other disguises as well! We have nearly every senshi able to say a few phrases on this phone, as well as music and lights to coincide with what's going on.
Fun - Once again, this phone is a load of fun! It has so many phrases and cards to play and choose. With it being so close to the one actually used in the television show, one could easily use this for cosplay purposes as well. It stands nicely on a shelf for those collectors and will keep the kids busy for hours playing with it. With it's random ringing, you never know WHO'S going to call you or when! Finally, it's not a HUGE phone either. Bulky and toy looking, yes, but not much more than an XL flip phone.
Cost - Unfortunately, because it's quite a rare item, I've seen this phone going for anywhere from $50 to $250 online.
Availability - Alas, this phone currently is not on any available websites that I've found. Nor will you find it in local anime stores since it was released 9 years ago. Now and then it has a tendency to pop up on eBay, but it's no surprise that this item is quick to sell or offer up a good bidding war.
This phone is a blast to play with and even more so to just have on your shelf! With other cards to collect, it's definitely a lot of fun to toy around with. While I wish there was a way to take this phone and modify it to become a REAL phone, sadly, there is no known way and instead, I will just have to continue to let it sit on the shelf. After all, wouldn't want to take it to work, have it ring and talk to someone that really isn't there, right? .. I mean, co-workers would ask who you were talking to and then you would have to explain all about Sailor Mercury and everything .. and that just seems like a bit of a hassle. Not to mention, a trip to the funny farm..
Still, this phone even 9 years later seems to attract the eye of children. As my boyfriends 3 year old has told me on many occasions "When I grow up and become Sailor Moon, I'm going to use that phone!" .. Too cute!
Sailor Moon Chan Says!
How ironic! I have just been asking about this item online since about two days ago and this is up lol. Timing? XD. It is extremely high on my wishlist. Where did you purchase yours from? I saw one on ebay not long ago but it was a little out of my price range
ReplyDeleteHow ironic! heh. I actually purchased mine from an anime store that was in Canada I believe? I'm not 100% sure, since it was a while ago. ^_^;; They do pop up, but they are rather expensive unfortunately. :( .. I remember when I bought mine, I believe it was only $35 USD.
