It's another flash back Friday and this Friday we're going to change things up a bit and take a look at the Sailor Moon SuperS playstation game! This game was released in Japan in 1996 by a company named ANGEL.

Quality - I suppose I'm a bit jaded by the newer games that we have today when it comes to graphics. Especially seeing that this is a PS1 game and was released 16 years ago. Still, in some area's of the animation, it seems a bit choppy or blocky. With so much coming out of Japan in this time, there were some games better than others. The animation that they have however when the characters are talking is very well gone. And the effects and songs are more than familiar.

Appearance -I guess this goes along with quality, but in the game itself, we start with a classic Sailor Moon SuperS opening (well, as best one can do for a game). The characters have different expressions when they are being hit, which was classic of Japanese games at this time, and they even talk a bit about if they win or lose. You can play it as a story or as 2 players. Keep in mind, this is a fighting game! As a single player, you battle it out with your fellow senshi as one of the originals! As two players, you get to expand whom you wish to be by adding in the other outer senshi as well. The backgrounds are familiar scenes from the manga and anime, while the music is familiar with the anime as well. They each give off their signature phrase before they fight and yes, you do get their signature moves to try out as well with some heavy kicks and punches.

Packaging - The packaging is familiar to any PS game that was released. It's packed in a CD case with the instruction booklet and a nice backing. Nothing too flashy.

Art - The artwork in the book is very nicely done. We have various pictures of various senshi scattered about the instructions for the book. The game itself is well rendered, even if the beginning is a bit choppy and often times seems blocky. There really isn't much of a "smooth" touch to anything, leaving rough edges, but again, not back for a 1996 game. The animation was well thought out and varies from the anime. The animation for fighting and when the characters talk is nicely done and seems almost cel like in appearance.

Functionality - This game functions fairly well for it's time. Although in some points loading can take quite a while and now and again it might get stuck on something for a brief moment. Otherwise, it's a really fun fighting game, reminiscent of the old arcade games like Ninja Turtles and Marvel.

Fun - This game is truly a blast! Keep in mind, this game IS a Japanese import, and unfortunately, you cannot play it on your US console (unless you know the twist-tie trick). And unless you have an idea of Japanese, it might even be hard to understand and decipher what to do when the menu options come up. Otherwise, if you're looking for a Sailor Moon game with everyone up to SuperS season, this is the game to buy! It's loads of fun for everyone!

Cost - I've seen this game fetch anywhere from $35 to $50 on the current market.

Availability - Unfortunately, I've only seen this game on eBay as of late. Sometimes when you bought it when it came out, it came with a card (random special holographic card, mine was Sailor Mercury), a poster and some playing cards. Most often you won't find them with any of the extra's, but the price of the game alone is about right for a video game even by today's standards.

So we have this awesomely cool video game that we reviewed, but what about SEEING it in action! Fear not my friends, for I have scoured the interwebs for days seeking out video's to show to you all! (Actually it was more like 5 minutes of searching on YouTube) Here's the Sailor Moon Opening for you all and if you want to see the game play, you can check out some here. Finally, if you're looking for an ending, you can see one of the many here.
And if you're looking for a way to play the game, it's probably best to check online for that one. I know of only one way to play the disk with an original PS. And that's a twist tie, lots of patience and another PS game. A lot of work, but well worth it to play your favorite senshi in a battle to the death .. er .. I mean .. a nice friendly fight!

    1. Depending on your PS1 system, depends on how you can do it. Mine is an OLD one.. so I could use a twist tie and the swap method. :) .. But here's a great video to help on which one you have and how to get your game to work! :D
